First and foremost if youre a fan of the SNES - buy this application, you wont be disappointed, even if the GUI is bare bones and minimal. .RSN files, if you arent familiar with them, are a great way to transfer music to almost already crowded iTunes libraries. For example, the entire musical library of Final Fantasy 3 (FF6 in Japan) is only 290kb in size. ALL the songs are only 290kb! You cant beat that! And quality doesnt suffer because .RSN files are created with the SNES hardware themselves. Not only does it have support to play SNES music files, but offers NES, Gameboy, PC-Engine, PlayStation, Master System and Mega Drive (all through in-app purchases, each costing $0.99.) Honestly, the quality is so perfect Id pay for most of the old consoles. After writing this review, Ill most likely purchase PS1 and NES support.
Downsides (so far in my use):
- Theres a very primitive GUI, and an even more primitive media player. One major oversight (at least, I couldnt find one if there is one) is theres no repeat button! Id like to be able to loop specific songs from within the application without having to construct playlists.
- Its very complicated when it comes to renaming files, or deleting specific files from a library. Im not sure it would be possible from a developer standpoint to allow the user to erase or rename files within the application (I know basic SDK and thats generally a no-no from Apple as it interfers with how iTunes syncs) but, more accessbility in this area would be nice.
- If you accidentally open up the Google images (magnifying glass) search within the application, it seems to stay open (iPhone 4, IOS 5.0.1 here). I cant close it, and every subsequent song that plays after searches in Google images for images which is annoying.
- Theres no timer indicating how long is left in a certain song. Im not familiar with .RSN files or other players, but an indication would be appreciated.
Overall, great, and (so far) no compatiblity issues with the files themselves or IOS 5.
Id recommend others to buy it, and hope the developer(s) will address some of these issues in future updates.
Good work on the app!
